My very first attempt at growing French breakfast radishes! These are incredibly easy to grow, and look so cute. I pulled three out this afternoon, out of the 20 odd I planted. I am not very sure how big these are supposed to be. But the packet says it's ready. I think they are a wee bit skinny and tiny still. But I'm presuming they are of the right size? Not sure. Do you grow French breakfast radishes? Do you like eating them? How do you cook them, and what do you eat them with? I was reading Stephanie Alexander's Kitchen Garden Companion, and she said it's really yummy, prepared the french way, with just butter and sea salt? Or as the Italians like it, with a dash of extra virgin olive oil. Sounds easy! Do you have any ideas how to go about preparing them? if you do, I'd love to hear from you! I've never eaten french breakfast radishes before so all your advice would be super!

radish greens are also good in leafy salads with other greens, a little bitter but packed in vitamins... most people just throw them out!
ReplyDeleteas for the radishes themselves, id say go classic the first time round and it seems, after all these years, that the french know what they're talking about when it comes to food!

i reckon..give them a good wash, then put some butter in a pan and toss these babies with a sprinkling of salt. and serve them on a bed of crisp salad. they're jus like radishes..so just treat them like one.
ReplyDeleteor u can even try pickling them!

They are so adorable! I've never had (nor heard) of french breakfast radishes, but I'm definitely interested in them now.
ReplyDeleteI love french breakfast radishes (maybe because I'm French!!!) and I reckon yours have a good size. I like them "à la française" of course: you just have to wash them, cut off the leaves (you can make a soup with those) and have a bite! With some bread, butter and salt of course! I didn't know they were easy to grow, maybe I'll try!
ReplyDeleteI just wash them and slice them and add them to my salad for a little colour and interest - and eat them raw !
ReplyDeleteOh yum! That is totally my favourite book at the moment as we are growing our first ever vegie garden. I'd go with some butter, salt and pepper. Yummmmmmmmm
ReplyDeletenever cooked them or actually heard of them before now, but they look so nice and tasty!
ReplyDeleteoooh these are super yums. we have them with butter and bread. or, take them alone with salad dressing. mmmmm.
