Fresh Goodness

Spring onions and thymeFresh from my gardenFresh bread
Went to the market this morning and bought lots of vegetables and fruits. I came home, unpacked and cleaned out my entire kitchen, did some gardening and harvested some spring onions, thyme and a whole bunch of juicy french breakfast radishes.

Starting this week, I will attempt to eat and cook healthier, and try including more lean meat in my diet. Darren needs to gain some weight while I need to lose some. We've been having too much sweet treats and we both just had a whole chunk of steak for dinner. I think the overload of red meat was the final straw. I kind of feel a bit sick after eating. Oops! So yes, more toufu, soups and white rice for the coming two weeks! If you have any nice easy soupy simple sort of recipes, do feel free to share it!

Thank you! : )

  1. hey dawn! I have been trying to eat healthy too! Here is a list of things I do, you can try them if keen!

eat complex carbs. i.e. brown rice, whole grain etc
less processed food: no can/instant. more organic/home made/home grown/free range
big breakfast, normal lunch, small light dinner :) I have raw oats and triticale with organic yoghurt and fruits.
go vegetarian occasionally or as you are doing, lean meat- kangaroo! try turkey too. mt barker is a good brand for free range
change of cooking style (i find this one hard, with lots of chinese stir fry. haha) steam, broil, boil
    use good cooking oil

as for soups...i just did potato and leek today. tried pumpkin soup before. my housemate made mushroom soup. all on jamieoliver.com!

  2. you harvested your own spring onions! have you ever documented your garden before? I'd love to see :D

also I do have one tip to share about trying to eat healthy which is so darn simple but maybe won't strike you as important. eat as much of real food as possible, meaning to say, no processed food like boxed cereal, etc. when you go to the supermarket, shop within the outer aisle (the fruits/veg/meat/cheese sections) and avoid the middle aisles where it's mostly boxed/canned/biscuits. I try to stick to this myself :) I definitely feel the big need to eat healthy too so I've been reading and trying to find out what is do-able without sacrificing food itself!

  6. One of my favourite soup/stews is this one here:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/apr/12/mushroom-barley-chard-stew-recipe

It's a really nice wintery dinner and the barley gives it such a nice texture! You can also mix and match the root vegetables depending on what you have on hand, and sub in kale or even spinach if you can't find Swiss chard.

I really like your blog, by the way!

here is a simple recipe i blogged about not too long ago:
dice and mix: avocado, salmon sashimi, mango, cucumber with fresh lemon juice, salt and pepper!

    it's really refreshing :)
