Darren and I decided to give this a try after hearing about it from Emma and Paula ( Our friends ). We signed up for it over the weekend and ordered our very first veggie box along with some lovely sourdough bread and extra mushrooms. We waited in excitement after our Sunday order for our Wednesday pick up time. I thought it was quite fun to wait and guess what would be in the box. We picked our box up last night and found lots of freshly harvested veggies and fruits. Super sweet fuji apples, pears, potatoes, onions, corn, mushrooms, lettuce, zucchinis, juicy red tomatoes and the list goes on. I think it's quite worth it. I like knowing I get fresh veggies that have no funny chemicals in them. And at the same time, I'm helping the farmers out there. I think being a farmer is like being an artist. We both have our own kind of craft. One's making things look pretty, another's making sure people get healthy foods. I like buying organic and would if I could afford it. This is my first little step. One at a time. I wonder if any of you do buy or eat organically as well. What are your thoughts about the idea of going organic, buying whole foods?
PS: I'm making cream of mushroom soup tonight with those nice bags of mushrooms. I love mushrooms!
It´s really interesting, taking into account that back home I was eating from my dad´s harvest. I really miss it. I love mushrrons too ;)
ReplyDeleteWe used to have a veggie box but you paid less if you went for pot luck and had to pay more if you wanted specifics - for example I have no idea what to do with Pak Choi but we'd get it every few weeks.
ReplyDeleteIt didn't work for us but then again we're in the UK and that's just us. Each person is different
Because of my love for gardening I have now for already 2 years a community garden where i grow my own flowers and vegetables! You can not compare the taste of home grown vegetables to the ones you buy in the stores. Juicy tomatoes, fresh peas .... Hmmmmm
ReplyDeleteIt all looks so delicious. We have a farmers market here where we buy fresh veggies, but I wish there was a farm coop like you have--that way I could avoid the crowds and lines at the farmer's market!
ReplyDeleteoh there's something about a nice pile of fruit and vege. The colours, the shapes, I'm not sure, but I love it. I'm going to go have a squiz now at vege boxes to be delivered to my new house!
ReplyDeleteYay!
Pepper x
when I was in college, my flatmates ordered a veggie basket too! It was fun though the quantity was kinda small and we had to pick up the basket ourselves... it was awful carrying so many veggies home during winter :( but still fun!

I've wanted to order veggies like this for a while now, but it's a far pick up from my house. Over here they're called CSA's, or Community Supported Agriculture. Also, I'm afraid I can't eat/cook it all in time!
ReplyDeleteCertified organic food is expensive here as well, but I will usually spring for it if that certain type of fruit or vegetable has more pesticide residue. If you google "dirty dozen foods" you can find a whole list. Even if it's not certified organic, I like shopping at farmers markets because it's coming directly from local farmers. A lot of them can't afford to get the official certification but still use less pesticides than larger growers.
I LOVE mushrooms! I think I could eat them everyday. Let us know how the soup goes!
my mum and dad used to get one delivered and i loved waiting to see what you got that week!
ReplyDeleteand i found that i actually cooked more: it's almost like the box encourages you to seek out a new recipe or something.
so - because i'm seriously wanting to do this, and ceres is quite close to me so i feel like i should support them rather than another company - can i ask what size box you got? trying to convince my boyfriend...
Really good post. These veggies definitely fair for health. I can not say about breads, but it is good for breakfast.
