Argh! How many times must creative types, artists repeat this. Stop stealing our work! Go create your own and stop stealing. Okay. i am just disappointed once again that my work has been stolen yet again. This time round a Singaporean label Victoria Jomo has stolen my work ( God knows how many they stole! ) and reprinted them on to shirts. Come on, I'm sure you guys can do better. I am truly really frustrated and angry. But in all honesty, I think I'm more sad than anything else. I really don't get why people want to steal from others. I work so hard to break it into this industry. The money I get isn't a lot and it's always stressful for me to have to make things work so I can make a living from what I do. Yet there these people go, take what I have and just earn quick bucks from it. Shame on them really!
Obviously the person who stole my work reads my blog. She or he obviously likes my work. So yes, if that is you, PLEASE stop stealing from me and from others. I know it's expensive to hire your own designers. But hey. WHILE YOU ARE EARNING MONEY, I AM STRUGGLING like crazy. And that doesn't even make any sense to me at all. SO yes, please stop what you are doing. Thank you! If you are going to keep selling these shirts, I will get someone to go to your shop and demand that you take down everything. Yes, I can be really 'fiery' when provoked! I mean what I say!
Somehow I have this gut feeling that this will never end unless I get to the source which is this dumb ass shop in Chatuchak Market, Thailand? If you've been there before, you would know how impossible it is to track the right shop down. And in this case, the shop does not even have a name! Fantastic! Also, does this mean I have to leave ugly watermarks on all my uploads ( What a nightmare! ) and also to upload shitty quality images? It doesn't even make sense. Why should I have to do that because of bums like them.. Sigh.

Oh Dawn... every time I hear of artists work being nicked I can't help think why it keeps happening. It frustrates me so much.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice big cup pot of tea!
Good luck,
Nicole

P.S I know of a very copyright lawyer if you want his details.
That is so HORRIBLE!!!! You must be beyond angry! I don't know what to say about this other than I know and understand how hard you work and love you all the more for it. It's not fair. This is abhorrent :(
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI just want to say that , I'm so sorry to hear your situation.
:)
Ugh!! That is just terrible! I really really hope they take it down >:(
ReplyDeleteThis sucks Dawn, so sorry!
ReplyDeleteI'm SO angry and sorry that this happened to you!
ReplyDeleteThis post echoes so many of my own sentiments lately.
I've been told of my work being on t-shirts in Malaysia, Singapore - the latest being Thai stalls in a random London market. The images they used were all from my blog - one was even my website home page. The HOME PAGE?!
And I was not alone. I recognised so many other artists on these shirts.
I just don't understand the absolute BALLSINESS of these people? It's one thing to randomly stumble across an image on google and use it without knowing who it belongs to. But when numerous images are taken, from the artists' OWN blog or website, it's so blatantly obvious that these people KNOW they are stealing. It infuriates me.
I hate having watermarks on my work, however I've had to use them over the last few years. But even those don't deter people. Every image theft i've come across over the last few months has seen these people just photoshop them out!
I'm now at a total loss as to how to display my work on my blog and my website. I want to share it, I love to share it. But I don't want people to steal it anymore.
My latest post touches on this. I ended up photographing the magazines my illustrations appeared in, rather than the illustrations themselves.
Whether I keep doing this I don't know. But, really, I have no idea what to do to prevent this sort of thing anymore.
It's just sad...:(
P.S I'm sorry for posting such a big rant!
ReplyDeleteDawn Im so sorry to hear this. Such a huge disappointment in the actions of others. Like Kelly has mentioned even the watermarks aren't deterring enough! What to do, their seems to be no end : (
ReplyDeleteI'm really sorry to hear this. It's so infuriating that you work so hard on something only to have someone steal it to make some quick money.
ReplyDeleteI hope you can do something about this. My thoughts are with you.
Oh Dawn again!... Really sorry to hear this again... Those people doesn't worth to get the money they earn from selling those t-shirt! This doesn't to me yet but I'm sure I would be very angry and frustrated as well....Hope you can do something to make this people down...
ReplyDeleteLet's all get together and spam their facebook page!
ReplyDeleteHave you contacted them at all?
How maddening Dawn,
ReplyDeleteI'm so wound up over this, so I can imagine how you must be feeling. Grrr!
Let's hope that Karma catches up with them...
Dawn,
ReplyDeleteThis makes me ever so angry. And I know that me saying this will not change or take away the fact that it has happened. However, I do want you to know that their are people out there that do appreciate, love and adore your sweet personality and talent that you pour into your art work. Dawn it is such a terrible thing, horrible. But do know that you have so many people behind you angry and frustrated on your behalf.
Love Natasha
Oh this is BEYOND wrong! How can they get away with this. If your work is copyrighted there should be in BIG trouble and have to pay you a LARGE fee. I'm so sorry Dawn, you must be feeling terrible. big hugs xo
ReplyDelete*HUG* I'm using all my social media tools at hand to spread the word. I'm so so so mad for you.
ReplyDeletedawn, would help if you could post the original design you had, next to the photo of that tshirt by victoria jomo
ReplyDeleteIsn't there any legal action you can take against these people???? I would seriously consider consulting someone...
ReplyDeleteoh Dawn,
ReplyDeletethis is just so wrong. And even worse because its so hard to track down!
you are not alone in your anger!
x
Hi Dawn this is so awful and frustrating for you....things like this is part of the reason why I decided to close our shop (and not really blog anymore). It really takes alot of energy, emotion and thought away from you when you could be doing far more creative things... so on a positive note I shall contact you in regard to your art classes.
ReplyDeletevery sad. Big love x
ReplyDeleteso incredibly frustrating & infuriating!
ReplyDeleteDon't let lowlife like these stop you creating spectacular art though!
xx
aww dawn this is terrible... i'm so sorry to hear this. i hope something can be resolved and they either stop it, or can pay you for your artwork...
ReplyDeletei love your art so much xox
Hi, this is terrible for you, I myself am getting quite worried about extremely long visits from people located in the 'east'. I have statcounter.com so I do have a clue who is checking into my blog. If I do end up having problems, I will look into blocking them...
ReplyDeleteGood luck.
Cheers
Rachel
Oh yeah, agree with what Jon said, post the original design next to it.
ReplyDeleteIt's so shit. It shouldn't be necessary for us artists to have to protect our work from people who steal it and try and profit from it, but sadly it is. So crap.
This is terribly sad and frustrating for an artist. I feel horrible for you that this had to happen. People do not realize how hard we have to work to get noticed and to make a decent pay as artists and then someone comes along and steals your work. Just horrible!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to also say that I'm a big fan of your work and have been following your blog for awhile! I adore your loose watercolor and sketchy style.
DAWNY!!!!
ReplyDeleteThese pple are just THIEVES!!!! HOW COULD THEY just STEAL your work!!!
on the bright side! it shows that your art is being recognised by people and they really love it, so they are stealing it!!!
Nevertheless, they are still THIEVES!!!
NEXT TIME, we go CHATUCHAK and FIND THEM!!!!
ARGH! This makes my blood boil! What selfish asses! Whenever people say 'imitation is the highest form of flattery', they clearly haven't ever had their work stolen before, because that clearly SUCKS PANTS! I'm so sorry. I would boycott that company, except, ha, I have no idea where Chatuchak is. Anyway, I hope this is somehow resolved. Best of luck :)
ReplyDeleteAre you still a student? At my college they had free legal services that students could use. Perhaps you could talk with them about this issue.
ReplyDeletethis is frustrating! hope you find justice!
ReplyDeletedawn, i know what this feels like. WHen this happens to me it breaks my heart, makes me hot angry furious, and makes me just want to stop blogging/creating - temporarily (thankgoodness).
ReplyDeleteTHe copying of indie designers/artists is so rampant and the copycats think they can get away with it.
I'm so sorry that you are experiencing this!
